... It's. It's a perfect name, Spengs. Can't think of anything more fitting.
[Venkman shudders a little, and reaches out to pet his new fox. Sigourney waddles over to the Vulpix and slowly reaches her little hand out to copy the gesture, stroking the fluffy coat. Everyone in the surrounding area gets a vivid sensation of petting soft fur projected into their minds.]
[Carefully, Lucifer turns back to look at Spengler before mobilizing and crawling up onto his face. Egon blinks as Lucifer manages to make his way to the top of his head and root himself in his hair. Egon slowly stands up, frowning down at his hands.]
Sigourney-- [He stops himself from chiding the Pokémon not strictly under his own care and glances over to Venkman.] It's intriguing what abilities these Psychic creatures have. This seems to resemble a kitsune of some sort--are you sure it isn't a Ghost?
[He goes to poke at one of the curls on the Vulpix's tails as Lucifer continues to stare at Venkman. Don't worry about it.]
[Sigourney keeps petting the Vulpix, who stretches and yawns again. The tip of her tail twitches as Egon pokes her.]
I think she's an Ice type, actually. She's a variant form of the Vulpix species- I know Ray was thinking about getting one of the standard ones, so I got the other kind for myself. [His voices trails off a little when he mentions Ray, and he scratches the Vulpix behind the ears.
Venkman is trying very hard to ignore the little mushroom demon staring at him.]
[Egon seems to quickly shift his focus from the Vulpix after the mention of Ray--fuzzy animals were never really of scientific interest to him. Except for Tarantula, of course. But at least she's named after an arachnid.
He moves to carefully remove Lucifer from his head, and the mushroom creature reluctantly detaches himself from Egon's hair. He clambers around his fingers like a small insect exploring its surroundings as Egon watches.]
You know, Peter, you should get more acquainted with the non-mammalian creatures of this dimension. Studying diversity in biology can lead to a greater understanding of organisms as a whole.
[Lucifer has not blinked once since he started staring at Venkman.]
I, uh, think you and Ray've got the creepy-crawlies covered. You especially. [He narrows his eyes distrustfully at Lucifer.] Besides, only mammals I've got are two cats, a deer, and this fox. Maybe the Mimikyu- I dunno what you'd really classify that thing as... Or Sigourney. Is she a mammal?
Anyway, maybe you oughta branch out to mammals, more. Get out of your comfort zone.
Spengler, you ever heard of something called an Eevee?
[ the reason he asks this is almost immediately apparently. there's off screen humming of a familiar reading song as jack turns the video on. something with long, white tendrils tipped in blue and pink repeatedly ... pats? smacks him in the face on the cheek with them.
the camera moves down as the humming changes tune, and egon is treated to a view of a distinctly fox-like pokemon, eyes squinting cheerfully up at jack as she hums louder. dad!
Yeah, I kind of thought I was gonna get a chance at ending up with one of the leaf ones.
[ he is not disappointed, this is just unexpected. jolene trills in delight when jack reaches up to take one of her tendrils, curling it around his hand. ]
They seem to be part of her, and they definitely feel like it's made from what she is. [ he raises his hand - she moves her other tendril to his wrist, almost hanging off said hand now. ]
They're a little warmer than the rest of her? So definitely circulating something.
I believe Leafeon requires being near a specific stone in order to evolve, like many of the possible evolutionary paths.
[He watches Jolene with great interest as she manipulates her flesh ribbons.]
And they appear completely prehensile. Fascinating. Have you tested the extent of their strength yet? Do you know what this particular evolutionary path is called?
That's what I'd read - didn't realize treating this little girl for helping out with the rescue operations was going to result in this.
[ jolene reaches out a third ribbon to touch the pokegear, as if greeting egon now. jack lowers his hand and in doing so, she mostly lets go of his hand (she leaves one ribbon in his palm) and fully takes control of holding the gear, swaying it above her head with a delighted look. ]
I don't know the full extent, but she's been picking up everything she can manage. [ case in point. ] And she's a Sylveon, according to the Pokedex.
A Sylveon? [A pause.] Oh, she must be...a shiny Pokémon, yes? I believe they evolve through their bonds with their trainers.
[A giant, one-eyed tree suddenly pops into view over Egon's shoulder, making a deep noise of curiosity. After watching for a few moments, she waves at the screen.]
Yeah, she's a shiny. I caught her in Goldenrod, thought she might have rolled around in some glitter - turns out that's just how she is.
[ hello, one eyed tree! jolene makes a little noise of greeting. is this scientist man your trainer? jolene is learning how to read to become a scientist too!
egon's question makes jack pause. ]
No. She's only three feet tall, though -
[ the pokegear gets abruptly dropped. that is no reason to not try! jolene jumps down and wraps all four ribbons around jack's legs, trying to lift him off the chair he's sitting in. jack picks up the gear and films her, bemused.
she uses all fifty pounds of her strength! ... but isn't able to lift jack. she sits down, letting go and pouting. ]
[Faraday nods--or at least, bobs her head up and down and makes an approving noise. Yes! She's been around with him since the beginning! She doesn't really do that much science stuff--she's more of an artist, herself, but she loves working with her hands and helping out where she can.
Egon, on the other hand, shrugs and leans back.]
Ah, well. Perhaps with enough practice and experience, she can learn to strengthen her appendages. She's quite an amazing specimen--you should feel lucky to have her under your care.
[After a pause, he gestures towards the Trevenant behind him.]
...Oh, yes, by the way--do you remember Faraday? The Phantump I preformed with during the Contest Spectacular? She evolved recently.
[ jack leans down to pick her up, setting her in his lap. she snags one of the deluxe special pokepuffs jack had bought her with a tendril, and stuffs part of it in her mouth. ]
She's already been an amazing specimen. She's been learning how to read - first on her own but I'm helping her now.
[ mouth full, jolene gives a little curious noise to faraday. what kind of art do you like?
jack tilts his head a little. ]
Huh. I almost didn't recognize her like that. What got her to get big?
I believe it was due to a...trade? I allowed Venkman to borrow her for about a half an hour, and when he gave her back, she evolved...somehow. Though I don't see how that triggered such a dramatic change.
[Faraday seems to light up at the question as she taps on Egon's shoulder, gesturing towards his bag. He barely looks in her direction as he hands her a small notebook. She flips through it, then opens it to show Jolene her beautiful pencil drawings.]
But that's quite incredible. Kölliker can read rather proficiently, as well as Faraday. Though I don't believe I've actually facilitated the education of the creatures under my care.
[ the pencil drawings get an encouraging trill from jolene. those are pretty nice! (listen, everyone has to start somewhere. ask jolene to type anything and all she can give you is 'cookie').
jack takes a look at the drawings and raises an eyebrow, but looks back to egon. ]
I've heard of a few Pokemon that trade that way, for whatever reason. I know those pumpkin things are one of them.
[ jack waves a hand. ]
Eh, brag about it. She's definitely learning at a decent pace - I guess the whole thing about them being mentally around 4 or 5 in human years can vary.
You mean Pumpkaboo, I'm assuming? My partner, Ray, has one in his possession. I believe it was the first Pokémon he encountered, actually.
[Faraday makes a guttural noise, her eye making a pleased expression. Thank you! She closes her sketchbook and holds it with her two hands, tapping her claws against the cover bashfully.
Egon raises an eyebrow.]
When I was five, I was reading The Necronomicon.
[His words are delivered with the gravity of a funeral director.]
Dirt is filled with a multitude of bacteria, and exposure to this bacteria is beneficial to a child's immune system in the long term. I admire your dedication to building your body's defenses. As for petty theft....
[That's...probably not what Jack was doing, but who's keeping track?
Faraday nods excitedly--definitely! She'll even try to draw Jolene, if possible! She loves the ribbons in her hair.]
I'm.. pretty sure I wasn't thinking about that but thanks. As for the theft - it was their fault for leaving phones on the table where five year old me could reach.
[ jack absolutely destroyed some screens.
meanwhile, jolene gives a little happy noise, standing up in jack's lap (and making him grunt). she would love to see that when faraday does it! she'll even bring something as a gift, if she does it. ]
[He doesn't see. His parents were probably the worst people to raise children in any capacity.]
Do tell me if there are any further developments in your Sylveon's mental abilities. I would greatly appreciate any notes you would be able to take on the subject, as well as the development of her flesh tendrils.
[Faraday makes a delighted noise, taking a hand to gently shake Egon's shoulder. Egon frowns, glancing over at her. She gestures towards the bag again, and Egon takes out a worn box of crayons for her.]
Faraday seems to have been inspired by...what is your Sylveon's name?
[ a little bit neglectful, maybe, and jack will defend his now-dead parent's ability to raise him. but he doesn't really have heart in fighting about it.
jolene tilts her head back and forth, waving her ribbons happily. jack reaches up to scratch behind her ears. ]
Her name's Jolene.
[ yes... after the dolly parton song. ]
And I'll let you know. She seems to really enjoy certain books over others, so she definitely has a goal with what she's learning.
[He doesn't...listen...to popular music. At Jolene's chirp, Faraday's eye widens and she grabs Egon's shoulders, shaking him back and forth. Egon knows a lot about science! He can definitely help with science stuff! He taught her sister, Kölliker, everything about science! Egon's glasses get knocked askew as he tries to remove her claws from his shoulders.]
[ jolene gives a little "vee!" of excitement, bouncing on jack's leg. jack has to put a hand on her to get her to settle down. ]
What are you two going on about?
[ jolene gives a little trill, curling her tendrils around her eyes until they look like glasses. when jack just gives her a confused look, she looks around and hops down, coming back with a piece of paper and a pen.
she writes something down, tongue sticking out, and then shows it to jack.
it says syntiss.
thankfully that's enough for jack to squint at it and then look at egon. ]
Scientist?
[ jolene chirps again and then points all her tendrils at herself excitedly. ]
[Egon repeats Jack, raising an eyebrow. He glances back at Faraday, who nods aggressively and makes an excited growl. He looks back towards the PokéGear, tilting his head to the side.]
Hmm. If Jolene shows any further interest in science, I could offer for her to help participate in future experiments. I'm sure Ray would enjoy having another small mammal to assist him.
[Keeping in mind that "basic" reading for Egon is, like, college level dissertations on incredibly niche topics.]
